I’ve been there. But before you do, you’ll want to take several concrete steps to be sure the engine won’t be damaged in the process. In this post, I’ll walk you through the key safeguards to put in place before putting a bunch of miles on the car.

Unless you have documentation that it was done very recently, change the oil and filter first. Old oil can hold moisture, contaminants, and sludge and replacing it is cheap insurance and peace of mind. I also immediately flush the coolant fully.

Next up is the timing belt. Unless there’s clear documentation showing when it was last replaced, I treat it as a grave threat to the engine and limit runtime as much as possible. These engines are interference designs, which means if the timing belt fails, the pistons and valves collide and the engine is done. Timing belts can degrade with age and even when they look okay from the outside, weakened internals may be hiding underneath. While you’re in there, you will want to replace the timing belt idler pulley along with the cam and crank seals, as they are very inexpensive, and all of the labor associated with a timing belt replacement will have to be repeated if they fail later. Again, these measures are the cheapest imaginable insurance!

With the valve cover off already, it’s a good opportunity to check valve clearance assuming the documentation doesn’t show it was done recently. The same rule applies even if you aren’t changing the timing belt – if not, go ahead and check the valve clearance and replace the valve cover gasket while you are there.

A variety of other seals on a Prelude may spring leaks, but they don’t necessarily need to be replaced immediately the way the cam and crank seals do. When an engine sits, seals dry out and lose their elasticity. Once you start running the engine again, oil pressure and heat can expose those weaknesses quickly. Because of this, I like to buy a complete gasket kit for each old car I buy so I can get to repairs right away once I find a leak. Valve cover gaskets, oil pan gaskets, and distributor O-rings are common places to see leaks develop once a Prelude starts to be run after a long storage period. Clean carefully around each of these before running the car regularly so you can quickly chase leaks back to the source.

With these measures taken, it’s time to think about fuel and ignition. Spark plugs that have been sitting for years can be fouled or degraded and plug wires can break down internally even if they look fine on the outside. The distributor cap and rotor can be sensitive to age and corrosion. Weak or inconsistent spark can introduce hard-to-diagnose symptoms, so here again replacement of the plugs and ignition wires is cheap insurance. The distributor cap and rotor can be retained unless significant wear of the metal components is seen, but be sure to remove the cap to check.

In my experience, an inspection of accessory belts is fine and replacement is only necessary if you see cracks or dry rot. When in doubt replace, however, as a broken accessory belt can leave you stranded or cause secondary issues you don’t need while you’re still sorting the car out.

By this stage the engine has likely been stabilized enough that it’s safe to run as long as you don’t have a tank full of bad fuel. My standard practice is to physically drain the tank and replace the fuel filter before putting in fresh gas and beginning to start fully testing the engine for smooth operation.

A variety of additional measures are recommended before the car enters regular service, and we’ll examine them in future articles. At this stage, however, it’s generally safe to take your recently revived Prelude out for some fun test rides!

When you bring home a Prelude
