The problem is that the amount of force needed to get the bolt off is so great that the crankshaft will turn even with the car in gear! I found the car would move even with the parking brake on before the bolt would turn. I tried a ton of heat cycles with a torch and not even an 800 ft-lb impact would budge it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next I tried to jury-rig a method of holding the pulley fixed while using a breaker bar to try to get the bolt off&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.preludemarketplace.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/IMG_8084.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-324\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.preludemarketplace.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/IMG_8084.jpeg 640w, https:\/\/www.preludemarketplace.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/IMG_8084-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.preludemarketplace.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/IMG_8084-600x450.jpeg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230; but the pin I had inserted through the hole in the pulley bent and the wood block started to break apart! Finally, I called some great Honda mechanics I know in town, and they said these bolts are such a nightmare that Honda made a special tool for removal of the pulley:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.preludemarketplace.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/IMG_8088.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.preludemarketplace.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/IMG_8088.jpeg 640w, https:\/\/www.preludemarketplace.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/IMG_8088-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.preludemarketplace.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/IMG_8088-600x450.jpeg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The black pin goes through one of the holes in the pulley, while the silver item shown in the photo is a custom socket that is part of the tool. In the photo I have positioned the breaker bar to show that it is then inserted into the socket to break the bolt free. I had to extend the breaker bar with the handle to a hydraulic jack that made the entire assembly 5 feet long or so. Even with all of that leverage, it took all of my strength to break it free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are struggling to get your pulley off, see if your local Honda dealership has the tool and would be willing to lend it out. It might also be possible that there are generic versions of this tool available for loan or rent at a local auto parts store.
